Number-One Cougars Advance to MAC Freedom Women's Soccer Title Match

The number-one nationally-ranked Misericordia University women's soccer team advanced to the MAC Freedom championship match with a 7-0 win over DeSales, Wednesday night at Mangelsdorf Field.

Michaela Fasolino and Julia Beck scored two goals each and Emma Sweitzer had a goal and two assists as the Cougars improved to 17-0-1.

Ally Waite and Kate Field added goals for the Cougars while Madi Welliver, Lauren Mondor and Emma Stroud combined for four saves and the shutout.

The Cougars carried the action throughout the match and had five shots in the first 10 minutes, including a couple of dangerous opportunities.

Colleen Kinsella chipped a shot over the crossbar from 12 yards out in the opening minute and Kate Field's shot in the sixth minute was denied by a diving save.

The Cougars got on the board in the 13th minute when Field played a ball from midfield to Kinsella who flicked it on to Sweitzer who raced past a defender and slotted a shot inside the right post.

DeSales' best chance came on a breakaway midway through the first half, but Brenna Field recovered and closed on the Bulldogs' attacker and forced her wide at the top of the box.

Five minutes later, Sweitzer dribbled along the left end line before finding Fasolino in front for an easy goal and a 2-0 lead at 26:41.

Olivia Maniskas rolled a ball across the top of the box to Beck, who ripped a shot from 20 yards out that deflected off the keeper to put MU up 3-0 at 34:29.

Sweitzer juked a defender on the right end line and again found Fasolino for a tap-in to make it 4-0 at 42:44.

The Cougars put the game out of reach with three goals early in the second half.

Kate Field served a perfect ball from the left wing and Beck headed it home less than three minutes into the second half.

Sweitzer made another sweet pass in front of the goal that was deflected to Waite who buried the shot from 15 yards out at 52:02.

MU closed out the scoring in the 61st minute when Kinsella beat a defender on the right end line and played a ball to Kate Field who scored from eight yards out to make it 7-0.

Misericordia will host Stevens in the MAC Freedom championship game, Saturday at 1:00.

Coach Stauffer's Comments: "I thought we did a really good job in our possessional phase tonight and kept them stretched out.  We were really creative in our final third and did a good job of creating quality simple chances. It's always good to get a shutout against a quality side and we look forward to cleaning things up for the final on Saturday."
