The number-one nationally-ranked Misericordia University women's soccer team's season came to an end with a hard-fought 2-0 decision to #2 Johns Hopkins in the NCAA Tournament Sectional Final, Sunday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.
The Cougars nearly had a repeat of yesterday's semifinal win with a near-miss in the opening minute of the match.
Michaela Fasolino's shot from the right post beat the keeper, but was cleared off the goal line just 45 seconds into the match.
Playing into the wind, the Cougars controlled the play in the opening 15 minutes.
Hopkins countered and scored on its first shot of the game from the top of the box at 19:56 to put MU down for just the third time this season.
The Blue Jays picked up the pressure later in the half and had a good chance denied when MU's Maid Welliver deflected a shot off the crossbar in the 39th minute.
With the wind at their back, the Cougars increased the pressure and earned a re-start from just outside the right side of the box in the opening minutes of the half, but the serve was deflected by the Hopkins defense.
Julia Beck played a ball over the top of the defense in 61st minute, but the Hopkins keeper came off her line to win the ball at the 6-yard line.
The Blue Jays added an insurance goal in the 65th minute.
Colleen Kinsella ripped a shot from 25 yards out that went just wide right in the 70th minute.
Olivia Maniskas had two dangerous chances in the closing minutes as her blast from the top of the box sailed just over the bar in the 76th minute.
Her one-timer from six yards out hit the crossbar in the 88th minute.
Misericordia finished the season at 21-1-1 while Johns Hopkins improved to 21-0-2 and advanced to the Final Four.
