MU Football Wins Season Finale

The Misericordia University football team closed the season on a winning note with a 6-3 win at FDU-Florham, Saturday.

Dominic Caruso ran for 133 yards and T.J. Lattimore scored the only touchdown of the game late in the first half.

FDU-Florham took a 3-0 lead on the first possession of the game, but the MU defense pitched a shutout the rest of the way.

The Devils threatened again early in the second quarter, but were stopped on fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line by Xander Shaner and Patrick Murphy.

The teams exchanged punts and MU took over at their own 16 with 6:59 left in the first half.  Two runs by Caruso gave MU a first down, but a holding penalty later led to a third-and-13 at the MU 25.  Lattimore hit Peischl with a short pass in the right flat that went 18 yards for a first down.

A pass interference penalty moved the ball into Devils territory and two runs by Caruso set up a first down at the 33.

Lattimore hit Owen McGuffey down the left sideline for 32 yards and Lattimore plunged in for the score two plays later to give MU a 6-3 lead with 1:54 left in the first half.

L.T. Messick returned the second-half kickoff 52 yards to the FDU-Florham 30-yard line.  The Cougars eventually moved inside the 10, but a fumble led to a missed field goal attempt.

The teams exchanged punts throughout the second half and the MU defense didn't allow the Devils across midfield.

Taking over on their own 13-yard line with 12:14 to go, Messick took a reverse around the left end and down the sideline for 47 yards into Devils territory.

Caruso picked up 35 yards on four carries to move the ball to the FDU-Florham 5-yard line, but the Cougars were stopped for no gain on the third and fourth downs to turn the ball over on downs.

The MU defense forced another punt ran down the final 4:09 to clinch the win.

Xander Shaner led the MU defense with 11 tackles and two sacks and Eric Glass added 10 tackles.
