The nationally-ranked Misericordia University women's soccer team's season came to an end with a hard-fought 2-1 loss at #6 Rochester in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Sunday.
The 24
th-ranked Cougars game-tying attempt was saved with 14 seconds remaining.
Down 2-0 at halftime, the Cougars cut the deficit in half midway through the second half and applied pressure over the final 20 minutes.
The Yellowjackets took the lead just over a minute into the match on a rebound tap-in after a header caromed off the crossbar.
Rochester made 2-0 with a shot just inside the left post in the 23
rd minute.
MU's best chance of the first half came in the 19
th minute when
Maegan Allspach dribbled into the box and got off a left-footed bender that was denied on a diving save at the post.
The Cougars turned up the pressure on both ends of the field in the second half and held Rochester without a shot on goal over the final 45 minutes.
Sweitzer nearly got the Cougars on the board in the 53
rd minute. She settled a ball in the box, turned and ripped a shot from 12 yards out that was headed off the line by a Rochester defender.
The Cougars were denied again six minutes later when
Julia Beck's free kick from just outside the left edge of the box was tipped over the crossbar.
MU was finally able to convert when Sweitzer stripped a defender deep in the offensive zone, carried deep into the box and rolled a pass across the goal mouth where Allspach tapped it in at the right post to get within 2-1 at 67:37.
Misericordia nearly had an instant replay just two minutes later, but the Rochester keeper smothered Sweitzer's cross attempt.
The Cougars continued to carry the attack and had one last chance off a throw-in on the right side. Sweitzer beat her defender near the end line and crossed a ball to the left post where
Olivia Maniskas' header from point-blank range was stopped the Yellowjackets keeper with 14 seconds remaining and the rebound was cleared away.
Misericordia finished 16-4-1.
