12/20/2023 1:15:00 PM

Former Lake-Lehman High School and Bloomsburg University wrestling standout Rocky Bonomo has been named a volunteer assistant coach with the women's and men's wrestling teams at Misericordia University.

"We are thrilled to welcome Rock Bonomo to the Misericordia University athletics staff," said Chuck Edkins, director of athletics.  "His wrestling resume speaks for itself and is only matched by his passion for the sport and his desire to mentor young men and women.  We look forward to him sharing his leadership and knowledge with our student-athletes as we begin our wrestling tradition in 2024."

Bonomo was a 1981 state champion for the Black Knights and was joined by his twin brother Rick and teammate Mike Leskowsky on the top of the podium as Lake-Lehman captured the state team title.

He went on to star at Bloomsburg University where he was a two-time All-American at 126 pounds.

He finished eighth in the country as a junior and capped his career with a fourth-place showing at the 1988 NCAA Championships.

In addition, he won three Eastern Wrestling League and three Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships while compiling a career record of 110-19.

Bonomo began his coaching career with a three-year stint as an assistant at Bucknell where he coached the school's first D-I All-American and their highest NCAA Championships finish.

He spent 13 years as an assistant coach at Lock Haven where he coached five All-Americans, including NCAA champion Cary Kolat, and guided the Bald Eagles to a fifth-place NCAA finish.

In seven seasons as the head coach at Lock Haven, he coached several All-Americans and was the 2005 Eastern Wrestling League Coach of the Year.

In addition, he coached LHU's Sara McMann who went on to become the USA's first women's wrestling Olympic medalist.

Misericordia will begin competition in the 2024-25 season with the women's program under the tutelage of head coach Ken Chertow while Josh Roosa is head coach of the men's team.
