Softball Sweeps Wilkes for Ninth Straight Win

The Misericordia University softball team used a pair of dominant pitching performances to sweep Wilkes, 3-0, 4-1, Sunday at Anderson Field.

Alexa McHugh struck out five and allowed just two hits in the opener while Emily Wenner scattered seven hits and held the Colonels scoreless for six innings in the nightcap.

McHugh had two hits and an RBI to help her own cause in the opener and Brianna Burd and Elizabeth Kelly both had RBI-doubles.

In the nightcap, Gianna Foreman was 3-3 with a two-run homer and Bridget Doherty had two hits.

In game one, the Cougars used a two-out rally to break a scoreless tie in the fourth inning.  Caitlyn Henry singled and came all the way around on Brianna Burd's double to left center.  Kelly doubled down the left field line to make it 2-0.

MU got another two-out run in the fifth when Redling doubled to left center and came home on McHugh's single up the middle.

McHugh held Wilkes hitless until an infield single in the fourth.  She faced just one batter over the minimum as a single in the top of the seventh was erased on a double play.

Misericordia used some two-out magic again in the nightcap.  Bridget Doherty and Gianna Russo drew back-to-back walks and Nicole Elliott reached on fielder's choice.  Elliott stole second and Foreman gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead with a single up the middle.

Foreman hit solo homer in the third and Elliott scored when Redling was caught stealing in the fifth.
