The Misericordia University softball team ended its season with a split of two games at the NCAA Regional Tournament in Newport News, Va.
The Cougars opened the day with a 7-0 win over York in an elimination game, but dropped a 6-1 decision to Roanoke.
Alexa McHugh struck out six in a two-hitter in the opener and helped her own cause with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate.Â
Kaitlin Redling had two RBI-doubles and
Zariah Alvin drove in two runs.
Nicole Elliott had two hits and scored twice.
In the nightcap, Alvin and
Emily Susanj both had two hits and McHugh had the lone RBI.
McHugh and Redling were named to the NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the top of second of the opener.
Redling and
Gianna Foreman drew back-to-back walks and McHugh singled to load the bases. Alvin gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly.
MU added a pair of runs in the fifth. Elliott singled through the left side with one out and came all the way around to score on Redling's opposite-field double down the left field line. McHugh's two-out single to center made it 3-0.
Misericordia added some insurance with four runs in the top of the seventh. Elliott singled to start the inning and again came around on Redling's double down the left field line.
McHugh singled to left and pinch-runner
Kaitlyn Slusser stole second.Â
Emma Griffin reached on an error and Alvin drove in a run with a single to right.Â
Elizabeth Kelly and
Bridget Doherty both drew bases-loaded walks to put MU up 7-0.
In game two, Roanoke built a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, Elliott drew a lead-off walk and Redling reached an infield single. Both runners moved on a ground out and McHugh got the Cougars on the board with a sacrifice fly.
The Cougars finished 27-13.
