#5 Women's Soccer Cruises Past FDU-Florham

The Misericordia University women's soccer team celebrated their nine graduating seniors with an impressive 9-0 win over FDU-Florham, Saturday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.

Emma Sweitzer led the way with a pair of goals and an assist and Sabrina Competiello netted two goals in the win. Lauren Mondor secured her sixth shutout of the season with two saves.

Olivia Maniskas had a goal and assist and Julia Beck, Madison Brdaric, Jyanna Mendola and Alyssa Steenback all scored goals.

The Cougars followed up a dominant, four-goal first half by tacking on five more in the second half to wrap up the decisive victory.

Prior to the start of the match, Caitlin Somerville, Julia Beck, Nikki Bell, Jill Mallon, Emma Sweitzer, Sarah Kowalski, Bella Gartner, Madison Brdaric and Sabrina Competiello were recognized for their achievements in the Blue and Gold.

MU got the scoring started at 7:00 when Sweitzer crossed a ball over to Competiello, who was waiting at the right side of the goal and buried a close-range shot to put Misericordia ahead 1-0.

After Sweitzer drew a free kick in the Cougars' offensive zone, Beck took the kick and sent a ball to the upper left corner of the goal to double the lead at 11:19.

Competiello struck again at 21:36 when she picked up a beautifully-placed cross through traffic by Maniskas and sent the ball just out of the reach of the Devils' keeper to make it 3-0.

Sweitzer got in on the fun at 32:25 when she worked her way around a defender and fired a screaming shot from the penalty box arc to the upper left corner to give Misericordia a 4-0 lead.

The offense picked up right where they left off in the second half when Brdaric snuck a shot inside the left post from 20 yards out for a 5-0 lead at 56:21.

Just over three minutes later, Mendola converted a penalty kick for her first career goal and a 6-0 lead.

Sweitzer joined Competiello in the two-goal club after Haleigh Wintersteen sprung her with a downfield pass that split two defenders. Sweitzer found herself alone against the goalkeeper, who had left the crease to play the ball. She capitalized on her opportunity with an open goal and delivered her team-leading 10th goal of the season at 63:10.

Maniskas increased the Cougars' lead to eight at 63:20 after taking advantage of a defensive collapse and beating the keeper from the far left side of the goal area.

Steenback rounded out Misericordia's impressive afternoon following a nice spin move and pass by Kowalski. From inside the box, Steenback chipped an arcing shot over goalkeeper's head to cap the 9-0 performance.

Misericordia is back in action when they travel to York, Wednesday at 7:00.
