MU Football Drops Heartbreaker in Season Finale

The Misericordia University football season ended with a tough 34-31 overtime loss at Alvernia, Saturday.

Misericordia took a 28-14 lead late in the third quarter, but the Crusaders scored twice in the final 10 minutes of regulation.

Connor McLaughlin gave MU a 31-28 lead with a 29-yard field goal on the first series of OT, but Alvernia answered with a TD to win the game.

Jacob Hunter ran for 194 yards and a touchdown and Davon Reams added 98 yards and a score.  Logan Tierney had a touchdown.

Owen McGuffey had a touchdown reception for MU.

The Cougars took a 6-0 lead late in the first quarter after Derik Sauve recovered a fumble in Alvernia territory.

Facing third-and-10 at the Alvernia 43 yard line, Hunter scrambled down the left sideline for 24 yards to the Alvernia 19.  Reams went up the middle for 19 yards on the next play to put MU in front with 2:01 left the first quarter.  The PAT failed and the Cougars led 6-0.

After a big kickoff return, the Crusaders needed just two plays to take a 7-6 lead less than a minute later.

After the Crusaders went in front, 14-6, early in the second quarter, Misericordia scored twice in a three-minute span to regain the lead late in the second quarter.

Hunter and Reams chewed up yardage on the ground before Jordan Alston's 19-yard reception converted a fourth-and-6 to set up first-and-goal from the one.

Tierney plunged in on the next play and Hunter converted the two-point play to tie the score, 14-14, with 5:43 to play in the first half.

The Cougars forced a punt and Hunter hit McGuffey in stride down the middle for a 46-yard TD for a 21-14 lead with 2:10 to play.

The Cougars extended their lead on a lengthy drive late in the fourth quarter. Hunter picked up chunks of yardage on the ground, including 18 yards on a third-and-28.  He connected with L.T. Messick over the middle on fourth down to set up first-and-goal and bounced outside on a keeper to give MU a 28-14 lead with less than a minute to play in the third quarter.

Alvernia used a pair of turnovers to score twice in a three-minute span to tie the game, 28-28, with 7:40 to play.

MU marched the length of the field on the final possession of regulation, but the potential game-winning field goal was blocked.

The Cougars kicked a field goal on the first possession of OT, but Alvernia answered with a TD.
