The Misericordia University field hockey team concluded its season with a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to DeSales, Saturday afternoon at Mangelsdorf field.
In her final collegiate match,
Lily Metress opened the scoring just under 10 minutes into the first quarter, giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead that they held until late in the third period.
Abigail O'Donnell had two goals and an assist and
Ava Cirigliano added a goal.
With a shift in momentum in the latter part of the third quarter, DeSales' executed a breakaway and chipping the ball over an MU defender to net the Bulldogs' first goal and tie the score at 1-1.
Entering the final quarter tied, the energy escalated, but DeSales seized control and scored three goals in a six-minute span.
The Bulldogs took a 3-1 lead early in the fourth period, but
Ava Cirigliano quickly responded with a powerful shot from 15 yards out, placing the ball in the far-left corner of the net with just seven minutes remaining.
Shortly after, the Bulldogs struck again, extending their lead to 4-2 with a close-range goal.
With a surge of energy, O'Donnell scored two rapid-fire goals within five minutes. The first was an unassisted effort while the second came off a precise assist from Metress, who set O'Donnell up in the circle for a shot into the bottom left corner, leveling the scoreboard, 4-4, with just over a minute to play.
As overtime approached, DeSales delivered the game-winner with only seven seconds left in regulation to secure a hard-fought 5-4 victory over the Cougars.
