Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

MU Women's Soccer Falls at CNU in Sweet 16

The Misericordia University women's soccer season came to an end with a hard-fought 1-0 loss at Christopher Newport in a battle of nationally-ranked teams in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

The second-ranked Captains scored the only goal of the game in the 12th minute.

The sixth-ranked Cougars finished the season at 19-2-2.

Lauren Mondor made five saves in goal for the Cougars.

CNU threaded a long pass through two MU defenders and Emma Ricci placed a shot from the right flank into the upper right corner at 11:24.

The Cougars had their first opportunity two minutes later.  Off a re-start near midfield, Haleigh Wintersteen carried the ball deep into the box, but her shot from the left wing was wide of the post at 13:34.

Late in the half, Emma Sweitzer received a throw near the right corner of the box, turned and dribbled along the top of the box before sending a shot wide of the left post.

Sweitzer had another look early in the second half.  On an MU throw deep down the right side, Sweitzer beat a defender and got a shot off that sailed wide right at 59:13.

The Cougars threatened again two minutes later when Olivia Maniskas dribbled through a pair of defenders in middle of the field before floating a shot just over the bar at 61:24.

MU put its only shot on goal in the 71st minute.  After a CNU defender deflected a service in the box, Caitlin Somerville one-timed a shot toward the left post, but the Captains' keeper was in position for the save at 70:25.

Maniskas gave the Cougars one final hope when she flicked a shot toward goal, but the offering was wide left at 89:18.
