The Misericordia University women's soccer team used a solid defensive effort in a 2-0 win over Emerson, Sunday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.
The Cougars held the Lions to just three shots on goal and
Emma Sweitzer and
Sabrina Competiello provided the offense.
Misericordia carried the play early and
Lily Heistand gave the Cougars their first scoring opportunity with a rip from the top of the box at 9:43.
Sweitzer was tripped up in the box and converted the penalty kick to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead just over a minute later.
MU had another opportunity just minutes later when Sweitzer forced a turnover deep in the Emerson end, but the Lions keeper came off her line to thwart the attempt.
Julia Beck had a chance on an MU re-start, but her strike from 35 yards floated just over the crossbar at 26:42.
Heistand's shot from the left flank sailed just high at 34:30 and the score held for the remainder of the first half.
Heistand was dangerous again in the opening minutes of the second half when she stripped an Emerson defender at midfield for a breakaway opportunity, but an aggressive challenge by the Lions keeper denied the Cougars.
The Cougars added an insurance goal midway through the second period when Competiello buried her own rebounds for a 2-0 lead at 70:12.
Lauren Mondor made three saves to post the shutout.
