The Misericordia University men's wrestling team has four wrestlers alive in the championship bracket after the opening day of the PA-New Standard Invitational, Friday at York.
Michael Williams (149) and
Myles Tirpak (157) both advanced to the semifinals while
Robbie Anderson (184) and
Aiden Hidlay (285) are both in the quarterfinals.Â
Hayden Best (133),
Jariel Severino (165) and
Anthony Matas (174) are all alive in the consolation bracket.
The Cougars are in sixth place in the team standings.
After a first-round bye, Williams recorded a 15-2 major decision over Rob Pavlek of Washington & Lee in the first round.
Williams scored a takedown at the first period to take a 3-0 lead and added a second period takedown to extend the lead to 6-2 after two periods.
He escaped early in the third period and got a takedown with :35 remaining before adding a four back points and riding time.
Williams beat Colin Menier of TCNJ, 8-1, in the quarterfinals. After a scoreless first period, Williams escaped to open the second period and got a late takedown to take a 4-0 lead.
He got a takedown early in the third and remained in control until allowing an escape in the closing seconds.
Tirpak earned two takedowns and two reversals on the way to a 14-6 major decision over Brett Patton of Penn College in the first round.
Tirpak took a 2-0 lead with a reversal early in the second period and gave up a stalling point late in the third in a 2-1 win over Demetrius Wince of the Apprentice School.
Anderson was dominant in his first two bouts at 184.
He took a 3-0 lead with a takedown late in the first period and used a seven-point move late in the second period to take a 10-1 lead.
He escaped early in the third and got a quick takedown and secured four more back points to close out the 18-1 tech fall over Jeremiah Rhames of Johnson & Wales.
He earned first-minute fall over Vincent Vogan of the US Merchant Marine Academy in his second bout.
Down 3-1 after one period in his first bout against Justin Smoot of Johnson & Wales, Hidlay escaped early in the second period and went in front with a takedown with :30 to go.
He added an escape and riding time in the third period to win, 7-3.
Hidlay earned takedowns in the second and third periods to key his 10-3 win over Dustin Uribes of Apprentice School in his second bout.
