MU Softball Earns Split with Concordia & Dubuque

The Misericordia University softball team split a pair of games with Concordia College and the University of Dubuque, Tuesday in Melbourne, FL.
 
After putting up four runs in the first inning, the Cougars dropped a heartbreaker in extra innings to Concordia in the opener, losing 5-4 in eight innings. A three-run fifth inning lifted MU over Dubuque in the second game, 4-2.
 
Kate Mager had two hits and a pair of RBI in the opener. Gianna Foreman had two hits and one RBI.
 
Rylie Nasso led the Cougars in the nightcap with an RBI on three hits, including a triple. Mackenzi Fizer recorded an RBI on a double.
 
In the pitching circle, Jennifer Milisits earned her first win of the season after only allowing two runs in six innings. Gabby Cruz picked up the save with a strikeout in an inning of work.
 
MU hit the ground running in game one, loading the bases for Foreman. The DP singled to left field, scoring Gianna Russo from third to put the Cougars ahead, 1-0. Next up, Nasso reached on a fielding error that allowed Fizer to come home and expand Misericordia's lead to 2-0. Mager stepped up to the plate and ripped a single to center field, scoring Foreman and Casey Funesti. After half an inning, MU held a 4-0 lead.
 
Kiersten Tinio gave the Cougars a 5-0 lead in the top of the third with a single that brought home Nasso from third base.
 
A five-run bottom of the seventh for Concordia tied the game at 5-5, sending it to extra innings.
 
The Cobbers walked it off in the eighth, taking the first game by a score of 6-5.
 
Down a run to Dubuque in the second game of the day, Fizer doubled to left to bring Russo home and tie the game at 1-1.
 
With runners on the corners in the bottom of the fifth, Fizer hit a sac fly that scored Bridget Doherty from third as Misericordia took a 2-1 lead. One batter later, Nasso found a gap between the left and center fielders and tripled, bringing in Russo from second base. The Cougars bats stayed hot as Sierra Miller raked a single that scored Nasso and gave MU a 4-1 lead.
 
The Spartans cut their deficit to two with a run in the sixth, but Misericordia hung on to win, 4-2.
 
The Cougars play their fifth game in Melbourne, FL when they take on Rose-Hulman, Thursday at 4:45.
