MU Football Wins at Widener

The Misericordia University football team improved to 2-0 in the MAC with a 21-7 win at Widener, Saturday afternoon.

Angelo Fluri ran for two touchdowns and Jacob Hunter added a score as the Cougars used a balanced running game to dominate the time of possession.

Fluri had 75 yards on 18 carries and Hunter and Davon Reams both had 69 yards on the ground.

Jacob Hoy had 50 yards on a team-high six receptions and Anthony Rucci had three catches for 70 yards.

After forcing a Widener punt on the opening possession of the game, the Cougars moved deep into Widener territory on an 11-play drive, but came away empty handed.

Hunter hit Jordan Alston over the middle for 25 yards on MU's first play from scrimmage and the Cougars used eight running plays to move to the Pride 16 yard line where the drive stalled.

Following another Widener punt, the Cougars took over at their own 30-yard line late in the first quarter.

The Cougars methodically moved into Widener territory and Hunter connected with Hoy for a 14-yard gain to convert a fourth-and-8 to the Widener 23.

Alston had a 14-yard reception along the right sideline and Fluri went up the middle on the next play for an 8-yard TD-run.  Connor McLaughlin's PAT was good  to give MU a 7-0 lead just over three minutes into the second quarter.

The Cougars forced another punt and took over at their own nine-yard line with 5:45 left in the first half.

Reams had four carries and Rucci had a 16-yard catch to key the drive that ended near midfield with an MU punt with less than a minute to play.

Misericordia took control of the game with a pair of lengthy scoring drives on its first two possessions of the second half.

After Fluri and Hunter combined for six carries to get MU across midfield, Hunter connected with Hoy for 15 yards down the left seam to convert a fourth-and-12.

Facing third-and-8, Hunter pulled the ball and raced up the middle, broke a tackle and cut back to his left before prancing into the end zone to give MU a 14-0 lead with 8:32 left in the third period.

The Cougars got the ball back after a Widener field goal attempt.

Starting at their own 26-yard line, Hunter hit Rucci in stride over the middle for a 38-yard gain to the Widener 36.

Rucci had another catch across the middle for 12 yards as the Cougars converted another fourth-down to the Widener 18.  Reams burst up the middle for 15 yards on the next play and Fluri plowed in from two yards out to give MU a 21-0 lead with 1:21 left in the third quarter.

Widener got on the board early in the fourth quarter, but the Cougars controlled the ball for much of the last 10 minutes to clinch the win.
