NCAA Game 3

Travis Zilg tossed a five-hit shutout to lead Ramapo College to a 4-0 win over Misericordia University in the first round of the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Baseball Championships, Wednesday evening at PNC Field in Moosic, PA.

Zilg struck out 10 and didn’t allow a walk as the Roadrunners improved to 29-14-1 to advance to a Friday date with the Keystone/Franklin & Marshall winner.

John Capuano and Ryan Rinsky both drove in runs for Ramapo and the Roadrunners took advantage of three Misericordia errors.

Brandon Berger had a double for Ramapo and Zach Carroll had a triple.

Evan Robaczewski was the tough-luck loser for Misericordia as he allowed just four hits and one earned run over eight innings.

Ramapo jumped in front 1-0 in the top of the second when Chris Werr reached second on a throwing error and eventually scored on Carroll’s triple into the right field corner.

Rinsky walked and Capuano reached via hit by pitch to load the bases, but Robaczewski induced a fly out to end the threat.

In the top of fourth, Berger blooped a double just inside the right field line, moved to third on a pop out behind first base and raced home on Rinsky’s sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

Ramapo went ahead 3-0 when Werr led off the sixth with a walk, moved to third when Berger’s sacrifice bunt was misplayed and trotted home on a wild pitch.

The Cougars threatened in the bottom of the seventh when Cacchioli lined a lead-off single to left, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on Joe Tagliarini’s single to left.

Zilg ended the threat when he coaxed an inning-ending double-play grounder.

Misericordia’s Chris Boroch led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to center, but was stranded at first.
Ramapo tacked on another run in the ninth when John Capuano drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.

Anthony Vinci blooped a single into short right field off the glove of a diving Boroch and Capuano raced home and scored when the ball was dropped at the plate on the tag.

Ramapo will face the Keystone/Franklin & Marshall winner, Friday at 7:45 while Misericordia will play the loser in an elimination game, Friday at 1:15.
