Alvernia Wins Third Straight to Claim ECAC South Crown
The Alvernia University softball team made its way through the losers bracket to earn the 2014 ECAC South Championship, defeating McDaniel College 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Misericordia University.
Rachel Fritz made the difference in the ballgame with a two-run blast in the bottom of the second inning. Tournament Most Outstanding Player Brittanie Wolfe earned the win in the circle, improving to 16-12. The righthander tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just six hits while striking out two.
Aly Shilling had two hits while Amanda Galanti, and Shannon Grim added one hit each for the Crusaders.
Despite earning the loss, Caroline Brehm allowed just two runs on five hits and struck out eight. Rachel Sidney led the Green Terror at the plate with two hits while Amy Baumgardner, Stephanie Maring, Sam Stitely and Olivia Kipe added one hit each.
With the win, Alvernia concludes its season with an overall record of 26-14 while McDaniel ends at 29-17.
