Susquehanna used a four-run second inning to beat Keystone, 5-3, in the opening round of the NCAA D-III Mid-Atlantic Regional, Wednesday afternoon at PNC Field in Moosic, PA.
Dylan Jenkins had three hits for Susquehanna and Spencer Hotaling scattered nine hits over 7.2 innings to improve to 5-3.
Matt Smith pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 11th save and left fielder Jared Musilli made a sliding grab of Lymbel Guerrero’s sinking liner to end the game.
Bryan Palsi and Nick Kennedy both had two hits.
Tyler Gurman led Keystone with three hits and Ricky Riscica and Kevin Catherina both had two hits.
Mike Pembleton scattered 10 hits over 7.2 innings while absorbing the loss.
Susquehanna took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Bryan Palsi led off with a one-hop double off the left field and Kyle Semmel beat out a bunt single. Jenkins soft liner to center made it 1-0 and Rob Marcickiewicz walked to load the bases. Musilli followed with an RBI-walk and Kennedy singled through the left side to make it 3-0. Dylan Glassmire worked a full-count, bases loaded to make it 4-0.
After threatening in the seventh, Keystone got on the board in the eighth when Riscica reached on an infield single and moved to third on Guerrero’s single up the middle. Gurman followed with a double to left center.
Cody Darley led off the top of the ninth with a walk and Catherina reached on an error. Dylan Corl’s pinch-hit, bloop single to center brought home a run Riscica brought in another with a groundout to set the stage for Musilli’s game-ending catch.
Susquehanna, 29-12, will face the Rowan/Wesley winner, Thursday at 7:45 while Keystone will play the loser in an elimination game at 1:15.
