2014 NCAA Game 2
Tommy Bergjans tossed a four-hitter to lead eighth-seeded Haverford to a 3-1 win over top-seeded Moravian in the first round of the NCAA D-III Mid-Atlantic Baseball Championships, Thursday afternoon at PNC Field in Moosic, PA.
Casey Fox and Zach Taylor both had two hits to lead the Fords while William Bannard and Nick Ott both drove in runs.
Rob Solano scattered seven hits over 7.1 innings while absorbing his first loss of the season.
Anthony Gaetaniello had two hits for the Greyhounds and Matt Hanson had a hit and drove in a run.
Haverford took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Nick Miranda singled back through the box to lead off the game and moved to second on a wild pitch.
Casey Fox singled to left center just out of the reach of a diving Gaetaniello to put runners at second and third and Miranda came home on Nick Ott’s RBI-groundout.
The Greyhounds tied in the bottom of the second when Gaetanello reached on an infield single and moved to third on a fielder’s choice and a wild pitch. Matt Hanson slapped an opposite field RBI-single to make it 1-1.
Both pitchers took over from there and score stood until the eighth.
After Bergjans struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh, Haverford took a 3-1 lead in the top of the eighth. Taylor ripped a double to left field that one-hopped the wall and came around on a wild throw on George Hatamiya’s bunt single. Hatamiya moved up on a sacrifice bunt and Casey Fox inside-outed a 2-2 pitch to right to make it 3-1.
Haverford left fielder Thomas Vallaro made a nice diving grab along the left field line to rob Charles Savite of extra bases leading off the ninth and Bergjans got a strikeout to end the game.
Haverford will face Baldwin Wallace, Thursday at 4:30 while Moravian will play Misericordia in an elimination game at 10:00 a.m.
