Ryan Easterday scattered seven hits over eight innings to lead Rowan to a 7-2 win over Wesleyan in the opening round of the NCAA D-III Baseball Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, Wednesday night at PNC Field in Moosic, PA.
Mark Benak had two hits for the Profs and Rich Powelson and Nick Kreiger added two hits.
Easterday didn’t allow an earned run over eight innings to improve to 5-1.
Sam Goodwin-Boyd had three hits for Wesleyan, including a ground-rule double, and Guy Davidson had a one-hop double of the left field wall.
Rowan jumped out a 2-0 lead on the first four batters of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Ryan Pavlik drew a four-pitch walk and Rayn Williams followed a walk on a 3-2 pitch. Benak doubled inside the right field line to plate both runners.
After another Profs walk, Jimmy Hill came on in relief for Wesleyan and scattered eight hits over six innings.
Rowan added a run in the fifth Kreiger led off with a soft liner to left and Pavlik followed with a line drive single to right before Casey Grimes’ two-out single through the left side made it 3-0.
The Profs put the game away with four runs in the sixth thanks to an opposite-field RBI-double into the right field corner by Connor Grant and a pair of Wesleyan errors.
Wesleyan got on the board with a pair of runs in the eighth. After a pair of Rowan errors to start the frame, Goodwin-Boyd had a sacrifice fly and Jonathan Dennett singled to center to make it 7-2.
Rowan, 33-10, will face Susquehanna at 7:45, Thursday while Wesleyan, 27-12, will play Keystone in an elimination game at 1:15.
