Nick Cooney tossed a five-game shutout and Sam Goodwin-Boyd blasted a three-run homer as Wesleyan defeated Keystone, 6-0, in an elimination game at the NCAA D-III Baseball Mid-Atlantic Regional, Friday afternoon at PNC Field in Moosic, PA.
Guy Davidson and Ellis Schaefer added two hits for Wesley and Nick Miceli drove in three runs.
Cooney struck out nine to set a new school single season record with 84 while improving to 6-3.
Rob Blanc scattered nine hits and allowed three earned runs over six innings while absorbing the loss.
Goodwin-Boyd gave the Cardinals a 3-0 lead with a three-run blast to left field. Nick Miceli reached on and moved to third on a balk and a sacrifice. After Miceli was erased on a failed squeeze play, Donnie Cimino walked and Goodwin-Boyd followed with a line drive into the bullpen.
Wesleyan stretched the lead to 5-0 in the fourth when Davidson and Schaefer singled in front of Miceli’s two-run double down the left field line.
Davidson doubled to right center in the sixth and came home on Miceli’s squeeze bunt to make it 6-0.
Wesleyan, 28-12, will face the loser of the Baldwin Wallace/Haverford game, Friday at 10:00 a.m. Keystone ended 27-14.
