UMass-Boston overcame a slow start to defeat Haverford in the opening game of the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional, Wednesday morning at PNC Field in Moosic, PA.
Bryan Dupre had two hits and two RBI and Dave Murphy drove in two runs. Sal Frosceno added two hits for the Beacons.
Dan Mantoni scattered six hits over seven innings to earn the win and Bobby Tramondozzi worked two innings of perfect relief.
Sam Kane had two hits for the Fords. Stephen Ridings suffered the loss despite striking 11 and not allowing an earned run in 6.2 innings.
Haverford took advantage of two errors to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Matt Goss drew a leadoff walk and moved to second when Zach Taylor reached on an error. After a sacrifice bunt, Kane drove in a run on an infield single and Taylor came around on a throwing error on the play.
The score stood until the seventh. Charlie Huegi reached on an error to start the inning. He stole second and scored on Dupre’s double into the right field corner. Mantoni walked and Murphy drove in two runs with a double inside the third base bag to give the Beacons a 3-2 lead.
The Beacons added three more runs in the eighth. Anthony Searles drew a leadoff walk and Kyle Boudrais was hit by a pitch. Huegi’s sacrifice bunt was misplayed allowing a run to score and putting runners at first and third. Dupre singled through the left side to drive in a run and Frosceno loaded the bases with a bunt single. Mantoni’s sacrifice fly to right made it 6-2.
UMass-Boston improved to 29-14 and plays Thursday at 4:30. Haverford falls to 27-13 and plays and elimination game, Thursday at 10:00 a.m.
