Robert Wingert is in his ninth year as the head coach of the men’s volleyball team at Misericordia University and his second year solely coaching the men’s team.
He is the first full-time head volleyball coach in school history and is the only head coach in the history of the men’s volleyball program.
Under Wingert, the Cougars finished the 2025 season with a 22-12 record. They were ranked or received votes in every week of the AVCA Top-20 poll and earned a spot in the MAC semifinals.
Overall, he has won 246 matches including 115 with the MU women’s program.
Wingert guided the women’s team to three consecutive MAC Freedom championship berths (2018-2021). The 2018 team set a school single-season record with 26 victories.
The men’s team reached the MAC and ECAC championships in just its second varsity season in 2019 and 2024 and traditionally plays one of the toughest schedules in the nation.
Wingert has coached 25 All-MAC selections, four MAC Rookies of the Year, four AVCA All-Region selections, three AVCA All-Americans and one CSC Academic All-American.
He has appeared on the NCAA Division III Men’s Volleyball Championship broadcast since 2021. Additionally, Wingert served on the NCAA Division III Men’s Volleyball Championships Committee from 2020-25 and was in the chair from 2023-25.
A graduate of Stevenson University, Wingert enjoyed a decorated playing career with the Mustangs, including a trip to the 2016 NCAA Division III Final Four.
He was the 2016 Continental Volleyball Conference Player of the Year as well a second-team All-American.
Wingert was selected to the NCAA All-Tournament team and was a finalist for D-III Setter of the Year.
A four-year letterman, Wingert led Stevenson to two ECAC championships and one Continental Volleyball Conference championship.
In addition, he served as chair of the NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
At Misericordia, Wingert developed the Cougars Care Special Olympics event that occurs each semester - creating opportunities for Special Olympic athletes to compete alongside Misericordia student-athletes.
