All three seniors scored in double-figures as the Misericordia University men's basketball team got their 2009-10 Freedom Conference campaign back on track with an 81-67 home victory over struggling FDU-Florham.
Senior
Dom Del Prete led all scorers with 20 points. Classmate
Mark Williams (11 points, 10 rebounds) turned in a double-double and fellow senior
Marcus Little had 14 points and five assists. Sophomore
Ethan Eichhorst shot 7-of-12 from the field and totaled 17 points.
The Cougars improve to 9-8 overall and 3-4 in the Freedom, breaking a streak of three consecutive conference losses and putting MU one game out of a playoff spot at the halfway point.
Before tip-off, Del Prete was honored for scoring his 1000th point this week, and he opened the Cougars' scoring with a lay-in from the left side. Eichhorst then ran off seven straight points for an early 9-4 MU lead.
The Cougars played tough defense in the first half, taking four called charges, but a late 6-0 run tied the game before Eichhorst's putback gave Misericordia a 34-32 lead at the break.
The game opened up midway through the second half, as an 8-0 run (capped by a Del Prete basket) put the Cougars up by 12.
FDU fought back to within three with 7:30 remaining, but Del Prete and Williams combined for seven straight points to stretch the lead back to double-digits. The Cougars made 11-of-14 free throws in the final three minutes of action to ice the victory.
The Devils were led by junior center
Ricky Fetske (12 points, 13 rebounds). Freshman
Mike Williamson scored 10 points, and sophomore
Bobby Faiges added five assists.
Misericordia is off until next Saturday, when they travel to Delaware Valley.
