The Misericordia University women's soccer team hung with the #10-ranked Ithaca Bombers all game but the Cougars were ultimately undone in the final 10 minutes as they fell 2-1, Wednesday at Mangelsdorf Field.

Ithaca struck on a breakaway in the 82nd minute, slipping the ball past MU goalkeeper Morgan Myers to overcome a good defensive effort by the home team.

Misericordia had taken the lead in the 28th minute with an outstanding goal. Sophomore Laura Roney held the ball up and played it back to classmate Sam Helmstetter, who ripped a 20-yard shot inside the far right post, giving the Cougars an early advantage.

MU's Nicolette Ruffler saved a goal in the 34th minute, sliding in to block an Ithaca breakaway at the last second. But the Cougar defense couldn't hold the Bombers off a minute later, as Ithaca equaled the score with an open header from two yards out.

There were few clear-cut chances for either team for most of the second half. Myers managed to hold a shot from the right side with an Ithaca forward swooping in to finish any potential rebound. The Bombers then shot inches wide of the left post, two minutes before breaking through with the winner.

Myers finished with four saves. The Cougars fall to 8-3-1 and will travel to Manhattanville on Saturday.
