Marywood used a run of long-range three-pointers late to down the Misericordia University men's basketball team, emerging victorious by a score of 71-64, Saturday in Scranton.
Ethan Eichhorst (24 points) and
Robbie Johnson (19 points) each scored double-digit points in the second half but the Cougar offense went silent late in the game.
Jeff Slanovec chipped in with eight points.
The game was featured in a live television broadcast on Fox Sports/My Network TV, allowing the Cougars a rare chance to play in a professionally televised contest.
The Cougars were efficient early in the second half, with post moves from Johnson and Eichhorst putting them up 32-25 just after the break.
Five minutes into the second period, Johnson made a great backdoor cut and
Frank Nutt found him for the lay-in, putting MU up 38-33.
The Pacers would tie the game at 38 and despite an answer from Slanovec, Marywood's
Tyler Reinhard dropped a long three-pointer to put Marywood back ahead by a point.
The game was tied at 45, 48 and 50 before Reinhard beat the shot clock with a 30-footer that put Marywood up 53-52. Eichhorst restored the Cougar lead with a pair of baskets.
Another long Reinhard three, his third of the half from beyond 25 feet, put the Pacers up 60-56. On the ensuing possession, Eichhorst missed but fought for the rebound and made the lay-in despite being fouled.
At that point Marywood's
Brent Keyes followed Reinhard's example, canning a pair of long threes that helped keep Misericordia at bay.
Both teams had struggled to find baskets early, perhaps distracted by the presence of TV cameras and the implementation of Division I rules concerning extra media timeouts.
A minute into the action, Slanovec missed a three but Eichhorst chased down the offensive rebound and fed the junior for another attempt from the same spot. Slanovec drained his shot, putting MU up 3-2.
Marywood led 9-5 early after an athletic leaping tap-in by Keyes. The Pacers continued to showcase some highlight-reel athleticism early, as
Lenny Martin converted an alley-oop on the fast break from a difficult angle along the baseline.
The Cougars quickly fought their way back however. A nice up-and-under move in the post from Eichhorst cut the deficit to two, and
Sean Bieski forced in a bank shot to pull MU to within a point. With seven minutes remaining in the half, Slanovec got into the lane and fed Eichhorst for an easy lay-up that put Misericordia back in the lead.
Normally an outside shooter, Slanovec also showed off his inside game, posting up for a three-point play that put the Cougars ahead 21-18.
The Cougars had already met Marywood once this season, defeating the Pacers 75-68 in the Laurel Line championship game at Misericordia. MU falls to 5-4 on the season and will travel to Lebanon Valley on December 19.
