The visiting Pacers went on two long runs to shake off the Cougars as the Misericordia University women's basketball team fell 65-52 to Marywood, Saturday in the Anderson Center.
Sophomore
Hannah Seely led Misericordia in both points (14) and rebounds (eight).
Jesse Robinson chipped in with 13 points, while
Kayla Sileo was also in double-figures with 11. Senior
Courtney Sykes had five assists.
An undersized MU team was playing without injured center
Christine Marks, their leading scorer and rebounder. Seely still won the opening tip though, as Robinson drove in for an easy two. A Robinson set shot and a bucket by
Katie Drayton pushed the Cougars to an early 6-2 lead.
After Marywood tied it, Misericordia regained a two-point advantage as Sykes found Sileo with a nice pass. A
Mariah Schaeffer three-pointer gave Marywood its first lead of the game, 12-10.
MU freshman
Lauren Smicherko hit a tough falling bank shot to tie the game at 14, and Sykes grabbed an offensive rebound and fed Seely for a three-point play that put the home team up by three.
Towards the end of the half however, Marywood ripped off a 12-2 run, highlighted by a pair of field goals from
Carly Leitzel. The Pacers led 30-23 at the break.
The Pacers continued their run after halftime, with baskets from
Marielle Thorsen and
Jillian Flanagan giving them a 34-23 lead.
Tyann McDaniel's three-pointer with 16 minutes to play finally broke a 16-2 Marywood run and ended a stretch of 6:04 without a Cougar point.
On the next possession, Robinson drained a long two to pull Misericordia to within six. But Thorsen soon rattled in a trey from the corner that stretched the Pacer lead back to 11. Marywood would eventually go on a 15-3 streak that established an 18-point gap with 10 minutes remaining.
Thorsen had a game-high 17 points to go with eight rebounds. Schaeffer had 12 points for Marywood and guard
Allie Bruet dished out six assists.
Misericordia falls to 4-4 and is off until after Christmas, when the team will travel to Huntingdon, AL for a holiday tournament. The Cougars face Bryan (TN) on December 29 and Franklin (IN) on December 30.
