The Misericordia University baseball team totaled 17 hits and four home runs, including an inside-the-park homer, as the Cougars beat Marywood 16-7, Monday at Anderson Field.

Nate Newman equaled the Misericordia single-season record when he launched his ninth homer of the season in the bottom of the fourth. Newman is also three shy of the school's career home run record.

Jamie Philippi recorded MU's first inside-the-park home run of the season in the first inning. The senior ripped a ball over the centerfielder's head, who tumbled into the fence trying to make a play. By the time he could get up and return the ball to the infield, Philippi was on his way home.

Sophomore Nate Hamlin and freshman Kenny Durling also added home runs in a four-run sixth.

Newman was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Hamlin finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Philippi was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and four RBIs.

Durling hit 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs. Sophomore Bubba Jasinski went 2-for-4 and classmate Andrew Tressa scored twice and had two RBIs.

Freshman Matt Spiegel earned the win in his first collegiate start. He retired nine of the 11 batters he faced in the first three innings, eventually allowing five hits and one earned run in five innings of work.

The Cougars put four runs on the board in the first, and broke the contest open with a six-run fourth, highlighted by Newman's four-bagger. MU led 14-2 after knocking in four more runs in the sixth.

Although they struggled to put together rallies, the Pacers finished with an impressive 14 hits as well. Ten different Marywood players recorded a hit.

Jeff Cleary (2-for-3, RBI) and Mike Pinelli (2-for-4) led the way for the Pacers. Mike Castellano and Josh Plisko were each 2-for-5 from the plate.

John Aber pitched well in relief, allowing just two hits and one run over the final three innings of the game.

Misericordia improves to 15-14 and will host Baptist Bible on Wednesday.
