Bush Strikes Early as Men's Soccer Downs Ursinus

9/4/2010 5:43:23 PM

Sophomore Andy Bush scored twice in the first five minutes as the Misericordia University men's soccer team defeated Ursinus 2-0, Saturday at Mangelsdorf Field.

Bush opened the scoring just 1:06 in, rising high to head in a corner from Matt Scott. Less than four minutes later Bush made it two, turning his defender and slotting it into the right corner.

Bush nearly assisted on a goal 11 minutes in, deftly touching a ball through to senior Joey Scanlon and forcing a great save from the Ursinus goalkeeper. Scanlon had another great chance from 15 yards out but his attempt was blocked by a Bear defender.

Scanlon continued to give Ursinus fits, nut-megging a defender to win a corner and then seeing his header cleared off the line on the ensuing cross. MU held an 11-1 advantage in corners for the first half.

Fifteen minutes into second half the Bears almost broke through but Bryan Kulbacki made a sliding tackle to stop the chance.

The Cougars had a pair of great chances in an otherwise uneventful second period. Dan Pinto played a ball into Bush, who again turned his defender and slotted under the charging keeper, only to be denied by the near post.

MU hit the woodwork again when Pinto forced the Ursinus keeper into a diving save and Scanlon's rebound was tipped up onto the crossbar.

Sophomore transfer Mason Astaneh earned his first victory in goal for the Cougars.

Misericordia is now 1-1 on the season and will host Gettysburg on Wednesday.
