Six Monarchs scored in the double figures as the Misericordia University men's basketball team fell 84-72 to King's, Wednesday night in the Anderson Center.
Junior
Jeff Slanovec was 6-of-12, all from behind the arc, for a team-high 18 points in the loss.
Ethan Eichhorst and
Robbie Johnson each had 16 points, and freshman point guard
Matt Greene notched 13 points and five assists.
A 28-footer by Slanovec was the only bright spot early as King's jumped out to a 14-3 lead thanks in part to three-pointers by
Nick Reisig and
Matt Fiorino.
Slanovec dropped another triple to get the Cougars going, and Johnson's steal and runner made the score 16-11, Monarchs.
King's was still red-hot from behind the arc as two more bombs, this time from
Kyle Hammond and
Joe Caffrey, restored an 11-point gap for the visitors. Again Misericordia answered, as
Sean Bieski and Johnson scored to make the score 22-15.
The Cougars were within five late in the half after a Greene lay-up, but the Monarchs went on a quick 9-0 run before
Stephen Artzerounian finished two baskets in the final 36 seconds of the half. King's led 41-31 at the break.
With 11:52 remaining in the game and MU down by 15, Eichhorst came up with a big three-point play to cut the score to 52-40.
Adam Brasky answered with a three for the Monarchs but over a stretch of four minutes the score was Eichhorst 10, King's 5 as the junior tallied seven more consecutive points for Misericordia.
King's pushed the lead back into double-digits but once again it was Slanovec keeping MU in it with a trey that made the score 65-55 King's with five minutes to play.
Greene hit a pair of big three-pointers in the dying minutes to keep it interesting, first with 1:45 left to make it 72-64 and again with 52 seconds remaining to pull the Cougars within seven. Unfortunately for the hosts, it was the closest they would get before the final buzzer.
Kevin Conroy (19 points), Hammonds (14), Brasky (13), Fiorino (10),
Kyle Stackhouse (10) and Reisig (10) all scored in double-figures for the Monarchs. King's led from start to finish.
Misericordia falls to 10-7, 3-3 with the loss and will travel to FDU-Florham, Saturday at 3 PM.
