Cougars Top Royals in Regional Showdown

10/26/2011 9:26:00 PM

Juniors Laura Roney and Sam Helmstetter propelled the fifth-ranked Misericordia women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over fourth-ranked Scranton in a battle of regionally-ranked teams, Wednesday night at Mangelsdorf Field.

Roney and Helmstetter scored for the Cougars while senior Katie Usher had an assist.

Jess Anderson and Caitlyn Sweeney combined for eight saves in the shutout.

In the 14th minute, Roney dribbled up the right side and let a shot go from 25 yards out that squeaked in between a leaping Royals keeper and the crossbar to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.

Scranton threatened with a shot and a rebound, but Anderson made a diving save to spoil the chance.

With 2:46 left in the first half, Usher volleyed a free kick into the box where Helmstetter headed it in to put the Cougars up 2-0.

Misericordia's defense was stout in the second half giving up only three shots.

Misericordia now moves to 11-3-2, and will play their final regular season home match against Delaware Valley, Saturday at 1:00.

It will also be Senior Appreciation Day in honor of Usher, the team's lone senior.

The Cougars will host a Freedom Conference semifinal match, Tuesday.
