10/30/2011 3:22:00 PM

Sam Helmstetter had two goals and an assist as the Misericordia University women's soccer team beat Delaware Valley, 3-2, to clinch the top seed in the Freedom Conference championships.

Laura Roney added a goal and Nikki Hensel assisted on the game-winner as the Cougars extended their unbeaten streak to 10 matches while improving to 12-3-2.

Tied 2-2 with 16 minutes remaining, Helmstetter headed home a Hensel corner kick to secure the win.

Misericordia dominated the play throughout and held a commanding 41-4 advantage in shots, including 16-1 in the first half.

After numerous scoring chances in the first half, Helmstetter put the Cougars on the board at 29:05.  Roney dribbled up the right side and played a ball to Helmstetter whose one-timer beat DVC keeper Julie Burnell inside the right post.

Roney made it 2-0 less than a minute before halftime when she took a pass from Helmstetter and slotted a ball from eight yards out.

The Aggies cut the lead in half on their third shot of the game when they scored off a re-start at 73:28.

Delaware Valley tied it less than a minute later when a shot from the right wing took an awkward bounce inside the near post.

Misericordia co-captain Kate Usher, the lone senior on the squad, was honored during a pre-game ceremony.

Misericordia will host a Freedom Conference semifinal, Wednesday.
