MU Women Lose on Buzzer-Beater

Allegheny scored the final seven points to hand the Misericordia University women's basketball team a heartbreaking 61-59 loss in the championship game of the Allegheny Invitational.

The Gators scored with one second remaining to take their only lead of the game.

Jesse Robinson led the Cougars with 15 points and 11 rebounds and Tyann McDaniel and Hannah Seely added 12 points each.  Seely had nine rebounds and was named to the all-tournament team.

Christine Marks made a pair of free throws to give MU a 59-52 lead with 2:38 to go, but the Gators closed the game on a 9-0 run.

Tied 52-52 with 4:35 remaining, Robinson's layup put the Cougars back in front and McDaniel's three-pointer made it 57-52 with 3:09 left.

McDaniel opened the game with a three-pointer as the Cougars raced out to a 15-2 lead less than seven minutes into the game.

Seely's jumper made it 7-2 and Kayla Sileo drained a three-pointer for a 10-2 lead at 14:59.

Robinson made a layup to make it 12-2 and McDaniel buried another trey to put MU ahead 15-2.

After four straight points by Allegheny, Robinson sandwiched a pair of layups around Caitlin Sweeney's three-pointer to give the Cougars a 22-6 lead with 7:01 to go in the half.

The Gators cut the lead to eight at halftime, 30-22, and stayed within six points for most of the second half until the closing minutes.

Misericordia will host Lycoming, Tuesday.
