The Misericordia University basketball teams travel to nearby King's tomorrow, with playoff position on the line for all teams involved.
The MU men (14-9, 7-5) emerged victorious in the final seconds of a must-win home game with FDU-Florham Saturday, thanks to a free throw by sophomore
Sean Bieski.
The Cougars are now in a three-way tie for second place in the Freedom Conference, one game ahead of fifth-place King's. With two rounds of contests left on the schedule, a victory in Wilkes-Barre would clinch a playoff spot for Misericordia, while a Monarchs win would see both teams battling for the final available places on the last day of the season.
Junior
Ethan Eichhorst leads MU with 19.4 ppg, good for second in the conference. Senior
Robbie Johnson contributes with 15.5 points and 3.7 assists per game, while junior
Jeff Slanovec leads the league with 58 three-pointers.
Three of the four games around the league Saturday were decided by a last-second free throw, as King's (14-9, 6-6) fell 65-63 to DeSales on a pair of freebies.
King's center
Kevin Conroy (18.6 ppg) provides one of the toughest matchups in the league for an undersized Cougar squad. The Monarchs can also kick the ball out to the perimeter, to shooters like
Matt Fiorino (56 made three-pointers) and
Kyle Hammonds (48 threes).
The Misericordia women (15-8, 9-3) sit alone in first place in the Freedom Conference, one game ahead of King's, DeSales and Manhattanville. A Cougar win would put MU in pole position for home-court advantage in the playoffs.
Junior
Christine Marks has been outstanding for the Cougars, and notched her 1,000th career point in a win over FDU-Florham on Saturday. Marks ranks third in the Freedom Conference in scoring (18.3 ppg) and second in rebounding (9.5 rpg).
Sophomore
Hannah Seely leads the league in shooting percentage (63.2%), a shocking 12.5% better than any of her Freedom opponents. Classmate
Tyann McDaniel leads in three-pointers (64).
The Lady Monarchs (14-9, 8-4) can pull back into a tie for first place by winning tomorrow. Guard
Celia Rader came off the bench in King's first matchup with MU, but still leads her team in scoring (13.7 ppg). Junior
Paige Carlin (10.8 ppg) and sophomore
Lindsay Atchison (7.7 ppg, 6.3 rpg) also lead the Lady Monarch offense.
The women tip-off at 6 PM in the Scandlon Gymnasium, while the men's game is scheduled for an 8 PM start.
