Basketball Squads Host Defending Champs as Season Heats Up

2/8/2011 3:22:25 PM

The Misericordia University basketball teams own winning records as the Freedom Conference season heads into the final two weeks. Both MU teams would grab at least a share of first place with a win tomorrow, but that will be a tough task with the men's and women's defending champion DeSales Bulldogs coming to town.

All four teams will be battling for playoff position tomorrow evening, and players in both games will be shooting to reach 1,000 career points.

On the women's side, DeSales (14-7, 7-3) and Misericordia (13-8, 7-3) sit in a three-way tie atop the league standings with King's. MU will be looking to overturn a 56-44 loss in Center Valley earlier this season, but the Cougars did defeat DSU at home last season.

DeSales guard Lori Lidlow was named the Freedom Conference Player of the Week after averaging 26.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.0 assists over two Bulldog victories.

Misericordia upperclassmen Christine Marks (17 points), Jesse Robinson (14) and Courtney Sykes (10) were all in double-figures last time against DSU, but the Cougars will need to do a better job against the press in order to knock off the defending league champions.

Marks currently sits as 997 career points heading into tomorrow's clash. On the men's side, DeSales point guard Brian Hunter is just 13 points shy of reaching the milestone as well.

Hunter (15.7 ppg, 6.7 apg) leads a DeSales team that has run off seven consecutive victories since falling 63-58 to none other than the Cougars- the only team to beat DSU since January 3.

Jeff Slanovec, the Wendy's Misericordia Athlete of the Month for January, drained four three-pointers in that victory and leads the league with 53 made threes this season. Junior Ethan Eichhorst added 22 points and eight rebounds.

The Bulldog men (16-5, 7-3) are alone in first place while Misericordia (13-8, 6-4) shares second place with Wilkes and Delaware Valley.

The women tip-off at 6 PM while the men are scheduled for an 8 PM start.

The Misericordia University cheerleaders will be sponsoring a fundraiser for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital during the games. The MU cheerleaders are selling t-shirts and will hold a 50/50 raffle.

Fans are encouraged to wear their t-shirts that evening to show awareness and support for those fighting childhood cancer, those who treat cancer patients and those who seek a cure.
