Ethan Eichhorst went 11-of-17 from the field but the Misericordia University men's basketball team saw its season end with a 76-59 loss to Wesley in the ECAC South quarterfinals, Wednesday night in the Anderson Center.
Eichhorst finished with 24 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Senior
Robbie Johnson added 10 points and four assists in his final collegiate game. Freshman
Matt Greene was also in double figures with 10 points.
Three-and-a-half minutes into the game,
Jeff Slanovec pulled down a rebound and found Eichhorst with the cross-court pass to make it 6-4 Wesley. Greene's three-pointer then gave MU its first lead of the day, and senior
Frank Nutt matched him the next time down the floor for a 10-7 Cougar lead.
Midway through the half, Greene leapt to grab a loose ball and then hit the runner to put Misericordia up 14-11. The game was tied at 16 before the Wolverines ripped off a 10-0 run to go ahead 26-16.
Johnson broke the streak with a scoop shot, and Nutt hit another three to pull the Cougars back to within five. MU got within three late in the half after Slanovec fed both Johnson and Eichhorst with nice bounce pass assists, but Wesley grabbed the last six points of the half to go into the break up 36-27.
Slanovec opened the second half scoring by hitting Eichhorst with his second full court pass to make it 36-29.
On the same possession early in the second period, Eichhorst used his quickness in the post to draw third fouls on two of Wesley's top interior players. He then fed Johnson for a jumper that pulled MU to within five at 36-31.
After the Wolverines opened up a 50-41 lead, Eichhorst again pulled the Cougars back into the game, hitting a pair of fadeaway jumpers to keep it close at 52-47.
Wesley stretched its advantage to 59-47 before a Greene trey cut the gap to single-digits. It was the last time MU would be that close however, as the Wolverines ran away with the game in the closing minutes.
Misericordia concludes its 2010-11 season with a 15-12 record after earning repeat trips to the Freedom Conference and ECAC championships.
