The Eastern University men's basketball team scored the final nine points to escape with a 75-70 win over Misericordia University, Wednesday night in St. David's.
Ethan Eichhorst led the Cougars with 17 points and
Matt Greene added 14 points, including four three-pointers.
Joe Busacca had 10 points and
Cael Evans and
Steve Artzerounian both added nine. Artzerounian had a game-high nine rebounds.
Jeff Slanovec made a pair of free throws to give MU a 70-68 lead with 2:03 to play, but Eastern closed with a 7-0 run.
Misericordia trailed by as many as 13, 40-27, with under two minutes remaining in the first half, but closed the period on a 6-0 run.
Artzerounian made a free throw and Greene drained a three-pointer before Eichhorst added two foul shots to within seven, 40-33, at halftime.
MU got within three several times in the second half, but Eastern eventually stretched the lead back to nine, 58-49, with 8:51 to play.
Slanovec's three-point play and a trey from Busacca made it a five-point game, 60-55, with 7:35 to go.
After two free throws from Greene, Eichhorst converted a Busacca steal into a layup and Artzerounian's putback to MU within one, 62-61, with 5:42 left.
The teams traded baskets over the next three minutes with layups by Evans and Busacca keeping the deficit at one, 66-65, with 3:15 to go.
Greene gave the Cougars their first lead since the opening bucket, 68-66, with 2:24 remaining, but Eastern went on a 9-0 run the rest of the way.
The Cougars are 9-5 overall and 1-2 in the Freedom Conference and will travel to FDU-Florham, Saturday.
