Cougars Advance to McCarthy Tire Laurel Line Final

Box Score Steve Artzerounian's double-double led four players in double figures as the Misericordia University men's basketball team opened the season with a 78-60 win over Baptist Bible in the opening round of the 21st Annual McCarthy Tire Laurel Line Tournament, Friday.

Artzerounian had 14 points and 13 rebounds while Steve Ware added 13 points and Matt Greene and Anthony Sergio both had 12.

BBC's Dan Decker had a game-high 16 points and Dan Dodd added 15.

Misericordia opened the second half on an 11-0 run to turn a two-point deficit into a 43-34 lead with 16:29 to play.

Justin Grotevant's three-point play gave the Cougars a 35-34 lead in the opening minute of the second half and Travis Buckner buried a three-pointer from the corner to make it 38-34.

Greene drained a deep three-pointer from the top of the key and Artzerounian sank a short jumper to cap the run.

Baptist Bible got back-to-back layups from NateWiersma and Luke Peterson to get with 45-40 with 14:50 to play, MU's Anthony Sergio and Cael Evans responded with buckets to put MU ahead, 49-40.

Another long three-pointer from Greene made it 57-44 and Jesse Urich hit a three from the corner to make it 60-46.

Greene nailed his third trey of the second half with just under five minutes to play as the Cougars put the game away with another 11-0 run.

After a layup from Grotevant, Artzerounian's dunk made it 73-54 and Sergio drilled a three-pointer with 2:11 to go.

The teams exchanged baskets for much of the first half and Greene's first three-pointer of the game gave the Cougars a 23-17 lead with 7:39 to go.

David Osborn had two straight buckets for the Defenders and Dodd's three-point play got BBC within 27-24 with 5:43 left in the half.

Dan Decker made back-to-back three pointers to give BBC a 34-29 lead with just under 2:00 minutes before halftime and Ware converted a three-point play with a minute remaining to get the Cougars with two, 34-32.

Misericordia will play Marymount in the championship game, Saturday at 4:00 p.m.  Marywood and Baptist Bible will play in the consolation game at 2:00.
