Kern Earns First Win as Cougars Cruise

Box Score The Misericordia University women's basketball team opened the game on a 12-2 run and never looked back, cruising to an 87-43 victory over CCNY on Friday evening as part of the St. Mary's (MD) Seahawk Classic.
 
First-year head coach Allison Kern earned a victory in her first game at the helm of the Cougars.
 
Junior Lauren Smicherko scored a game and career-high 15 points to lead the Cougars while freshman Sam Baro scored 11 off the bench in her first game in an MU uniform.
 
Hannah Seely also added ten points, and Katie Drayton added eight points and a team-high eight rebounds. Twelve different players scored for the Cougars on the night.
 
A Kristal Abreu layup just 29 seconds in gave CCNY a 2-0 lead, but it was the only time that the Cougars would trail all night, as back-to back layups by Drayton and Seely sparked a 12-0 run.
 
The Beavers closed the gap to 15-11 on a Sajidah Pressley free throw, but they would never get closer. The  Cougars went on a 20-0 run to take command of the game and led 42-15 at halftime following a three-point play by Kayla Sileo in the closing seconds of the first half.
 
Both teams traded baskets over the opening minutes of the second half, but the Cougars a 14-4 run spanning six minutes of action to increase their lead to 64-27 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the second half. The teams once again traded points before MU closed the game on a 10-0 run.
 
Syreeta Williams led CCNY with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Bria Fisher added 10 points and a game-high 18 rebounds.
 
The Cougars shot 44 percent from the floor, including 36 percent from three, and 50 percent at the foul line. MU also held a 50-46 advantage on the boards and forced CCNY into 40 turnovers.
 
The Cougars will play Rosemont tomorrow at 3:00 PM.
