11/17/2012 7:03:00 PM

Box Score Junior Hannah Seely scored a game and career-high 23 points and posted 11 rebounds, and the Misericordia University women's basketball team went 16-18 from the foul line in the second half to hold off Rosemont, 67-56, Saturday afternoon in their second game of the St. Mary's (MD) Seahawk Classic.

Katie Drayton and Kayla Sileo each scored 12 points for the Cougars with Drayton adding eight rebounds and three steals.

Seely scored the first six points of the game to give MU (2-0) an early lead, but Rosemont would battle back to tie the score 6-6. The teams traded baskets over the next few minutes before a pair of Drayton jumpers gave the Cougars an 18-12 lead and forced a Rosemont timeout.

The Ravens responded out of the timeout, tying the game at 18-18 on back to back Liz Coyne layups and taking a 25-22 lead- their first of the game- with 2:44 remaining in the first half.  Rosemont led 27-23 following a Katharine Reppert jumper, but the Cougars scored the final six points of the half, capped by a Seely layup in the final seconds to take a 29-27 lead into the locker room.

The Cougars shot 40 percent from the floor in the first half while holding Rosemont to 36 percent shooting. However, the Ravens kept the game close by scoring 15 points off of MU turnovers.

The Cougars extended their lead in the opening minutes of the second half, as a Sileo jumper gave MU a 35-28 advantage with 16:47 to play. The Cougar lead swelled to 49-39 on another Sileo jumper at the midway point of the second half. The Ravens continued to chip away, as a pair of Ashley Montecchio layups closed the deficit to 51-45, but a Nikki Baro jumper made the score 53-45 with 8:34 remaining.

From there, the Cougars would seal the game at the foul line, as both teams combined for just five field goals from that point on. MU scored 10 of its final 14 points at the stripe, including 7-8 from senior Tyann McDaniel. The Cougars held their largest lead of the game at 67-53 with just 26 seconds remaining before a Coyne free throw and a Montecchio layup gave the final margin.

MU was 21-24 from the foul line (88%) for the game to offset shooting just 34 percent from the floor and not making a single three. The Cougar defense held the Ravens to 33 percent from the floor and forced 33 Rosemont turnovers.

Coyne led the Ravens with a team-high 18 points and game-high 15 rebounds while Montecchio added 17 points and nine rebounds.

The Cougars will look to remain unbeaten when they travel to Lycoming for a 6:00 PM tipoff on Tuesday.
