Box Score The Misericordia University men's basketball team scored just two points over a nine minute span and committed 23 turnovers as the Cougars fell to #16 St. Mary's (MD) 79-54 Sunday afternoon at the O'Brien Arc Arena in the Seahawk Classic.
Cael Evans led the Cougars with 13 points in the loss while
Jesse Urich chipped in 11.
Steve Ware also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
MU (6-5) played with the Seahawks early in the game, as
Joe Busacca scored the Cougars' first four points to tie the score at 4-4.
St. Mary's extended their lead to 12-7 on a Nick LaGuerre layup, but the Cougars would respond with threes by
Matt Greene and
Anthony Sergio on consecutive possessions to close the gap to 15-13 with 11:16 to play.
Donn Hill would score six straight points for the Seahawks to give them a 21-13 lead, but a Urich three closed the gap back to 21-16. Following a layup by Jeff Haus and another Hill jumper, Urich hit another three to make the score 25-19 with 5:53 remaining in the first half.
From that point, the Seahawks would close the first half on a 19-2 run to take a 44-21 halftime lead.
St. Mary's continued their run by scoring the first 11 points of the second half to take a 55-21 lead- their largest of the game. The Cougars would draw no closer than 24 points for the remainder of the contest.
Hill led the Seahawks with 19 points and five steals, while LaGuerre chipped in 16 and Devin Spencer and Brendan McFall added 12 each.
The Cougars shot 38 percent from the field, 32 percent from three-point range and 65 percent from the foul line.
Greene and Urich were named to the All-Tournament team.
MU returns to action on January 2 when they travel to Albright for a 7:00 PM contest.
