Cougars Can't Capitalize, Fall to Susquehanna

The Misericordia men's soccer team outshot Susquehanna 19-14 but couldn't overcome a late Crusader goal, falling 2-1 at Mangelsdorf Field on Wednesday evening.

Senior Andy Bush scored his fourth goal of the season, but the Cougars failed to take advantage of several other opportunities to score.

“We knew going in to this match that we had to outwork our opponent,” said MU coach Chuck Edkins. “I thought we did a great job of getting to balls, and I thought we matched their work rate tonight. It was just a disappointing result on the scoreboard for our effort.”

Susquehanna got on the board in the 17th minute when John Boylan found Andrew Hayes for his second goal of the season.

The Cougars responded quickly as Bush found the back of the net for the fourth time this year to net the score at 1-1.

The game remained tied until the 82nd minute, when Hayes beat the Cougar defense to score the game-winner and take the team lead in goals with three.

“That second goal was a mental breakdown on our part,” said Edkins. “That's not characteristic of us, and it's something we've got to learn from. Giving up two goals is not our idea of a good night.”

Along with holding an edge in total shots, the Cougars held a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.

“We've got to be able to finish,” said Edkins We had guys in some key places on the field that warranted a goal, and we just couldn't capitalize tonight.

After starting the season 3-0, MU has dropped two straight contests.

“We need to hold our focus just a little bit longer and keep up the work rate,” Edkins concluded.

The Cougars will look to get back on track on Saturday when they travel to Arcadia for a 7:00 PM match.
