Esposito's Two Goals Lead MU Past F&M

10/30/2013 8:55:00 PM

Box Score Senior Emily Esposito scored two goals and helped erase an early deficit in leading the Misericordia University women's soccer team to a 3-2 non-conference win over visiting Franklin & Marshall.

The win moves Misericordia to 15-2-1 overall while the loss moves the Diplomats to 5-8-3.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Esposito scored in the 49th minute to tie the game, and then gave the Cougars a lead they wouldn't relinquish in 68th minute after taking a pass from junior Megan Mahoney.

The goals were Esposito's fourth and fifth of the year. Mahoney earned her 13th assist of the season, tying her for the school's all-time single season record.

The Cougars made it 3-1 in the 81st minute when Meghan Antrim headed a ball off a corner from Megan Lannigan. For Antrim, it was her ninth goal of the season.

The Diplomats scored late to cut it to 3-2 on a high-arching shot from Spencer Plante that went over the outstreched arms of Maureen Ciccosanti, but they could not move any closer.

Ciccosanti, the reigning Freedom Conference Defensive Player of the Week, made one save on the evening.

MU is now outscoring its opponents 62-8 on the season.

The Cougars are back in action on Nov. 2 against WIlkes for the final Freedom Conference game of the season. It is Senior Appreciation Day and the Cougars will be honoring Kelly Mott, Jackie Wheatley, Alyssa Mocion, Nicolette Ruffler, Kimberly Gottshall and Esposito.
