Lannigan, Antrim Lead MU to NCAA Victory

11/16/2013 1:02:00 PM

Box Score Megan Lannigan broke a scoreless tie in the 54th minute and Meghan Antrim added an insurance goal to lift the No. 10 Misericordia University women's soccer team to a 2-0 win in the first round of the NCAA tournament against Drew University on Saturday.

The win propels the Cougars to 19-2-1 on the season while the loss ends the Rangers' season at 15-4-1.

After the first 45 minutes yielded minimal scoring chances on either side, Lannigan scored her 15th goal of the year. Erin McGreal played a ball from the right side to a slashing Megan Mahoney, who received the pass right in front of the Drew net before one-touching a pass to Lannigan, who was able to beat a diving keeper to give Misericordia a 1-0 lead.

Exactly five minutes later Antrim scored on a pass from Kylen Smith. It was Antrim's 12th goal of the year.

The Rangers tried to mount a comeback at 65:25 but Liz Loiodice's shot was deflected off the left post and Emma Campbell's rebound attempt was saved by Maureen Ciccosanti. The first-team all-Freedom conference goalkeeper had seven saves.

Drew had the best chance to net the games' first goal when a corner by Karoline Curas bounced in the box and skimmed off the crossbar before being cleared out by the Cougars at 8:30.

At 15:30 Emily Esposito had the Cougars' first chance to take an early lead, but her header went just high.

The win marks the third consecutive year that the Cougars have advanced to the round of 32. MU will play the winner of Trinity and Elizabethtown.
