vonEgypt's Two Goals Give MU Win on Senior Day

11/2/2013 5:39:00 PM

Box Score Nick vonEgypt scored two goals and added an assist in helping the Misericordia University men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory in the regular season finale against Wilkes on Saturday.

The win ends the Cougars regular season at 13-5 overall and an impressive 5-2 in Freedom Conference play. The reigning conference champion Cougars will open Freedom Conference tournament play on Nov. 6. MU will be the No. 2 seed.

Misericordia's first goal came as a result of vonEgypt's hustle. He made a run down toward the endline to track down a long pass when a Colonel defender attempted to box him out and let the ball roll out of play. However, he worked around the defender and played the ball back to the middle where Derek Antonini was wide open in front of the net to give MU the quick 1-0 lead.

The lead was short lived as Wilkes countered just three minutes later when Geoffrey Arentz put one past Cougar keeper Barry Fitzgerald following a corner and a subsequent logjam in front of the net.

The frantic first half continued in the 11th minute when vonEgypt scored his team-leading tenth goal of the season after putting home a rebound off his own shot. He added to that total just a minute into the second half when he scored from 20 yards out to give MU a 3-1 lead.

With the intensity and physical play picking up midway through the second half, the Cougar defense held strong, yielding just one more goal throughout the game.

Fitzgerald finished with five total saves.

Today marked the last regular season home game for seven Cougar seniors: Billy Sopko, Nick Ferguson, David Stoner, Dennis Halpin, Alex Romeo, T.J. Schaefer and Ryan Swartwood.
