Box Score The Misericordia University women's soccer team wrapped up its third consecutive unbeaten season in the Freedom Conference with a 2-0 win over Wilkes, Saturday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.
Megan Mahoney and
Meghan Antrim both scored goals as the Cougars improved to 16-2-1 overall and 7-0 in the Freedom.
Mahoney broke a scoreless tie when she lofted a direct kick from the left wing out of the reach of Wilkes keeper Kristy Colangelo at 27:05.
Antrim made it 2-0 early in the second half as the Cougars won for the ninth straight game.
After being honored with five classmates on Senior Appreciation Day prior to the game,
Emily Esposito nearly gave the Cougars a lead with a shot inside the box, but Colangelo made the point-blank stoop.
Wilkes had its best scoring chance at 30:05 when MU keeper
Maureen Ciccosanti came off her line and deflected a ball that Samantha Hockley fired on the open net.
Misericordia's
Devin Simpson was in the right spot as she cleared the ball of the line.
Later in the first half, Grace Fazzi made a run, but Ciccosanti aggressively came off her line to make a sliding save.
After having a goal negated by an off sides call, Antrim responded a minute later with an insurance goal;
MU's
Kylen Smith nearly made it 3-0 nine minutes into the second half when she carried the ball down the left sideline and cutting back to the center of the field, but her shot from 30 yards out went off the crossbar.
Mahoney's shot from the top of the box just two minutes later was knocked away by Colangelo.
Antrim and Mahoney combined on a give-and-go in the final minutes, but Mahoney's shot from 15 yards out sailed high.
Mahoney rolled a ball through the box with five minutes remaining and Antrim put on goal from three yards out, but Wilkes' Megan Binder cleared off her own line.
Misericordia will host FDU-Florham in a Freedom Conference semifinal, Tuesday at 7:00.
