Eastern Men Stun Cougars

Box Score Eastern stunned the Misericordia University men's basketball team with a 66-59 win over time, Wednesday at Eastern.

Misericordia erased a 12-point second half deficit to take a 53-51 lead with less than a minute remaining, but the Eagles battled back to force overtime.

Justin Grotevant had 17 points and nine rebounds and Steve Ware added 11 points and 11 rebounds before both players fouled out in overtime.

Joe Busacca added 11 points for the Cougars who fell to 11-11 overall and 7-4 in the Freedom.

Ware converted a three-point play to put MU ahead with 31 seconds left as the Cougars erased a 46-34 hole over the final seven minutes of regulation.

Patrick Widdoss started an 8-0 run over two minutes with a pair of free throws and Grotevant followed with a layup.

Widdoss and Busacca added layups to pull MU within 46-42 with 5:34 to play.

Trailing 50-44 with 3:07 to go, Ware made two free throws and Grotevant added a pair of layups to tie it, 50-50, with just under a minute to play.

After Ware's three-point play gave MU a one-point lead, Eastern tied it, 53-53, with 13 seconds to go and the Cougars turned it over on a potential game-winning possession.

The teams played to a 58-58 tie over the first two minutes of OT, but Eastern closed the extra session on a 7-1 run.

The first half featured a back-and-forth battle and a 21-21 tie, but the Eagles scored five points in the final 10 seconds, including a three-pointer at the buzzer to take a 26-21 halftime lead.

Misericordia will host Delaware Valley, Saturday at 3:00.
