Box Score Matt Greene scored a game-high 16 points and
Steve Ware scored the game-winning bucket to lead the Misericordia men's basketball team to a 57-56 win over DeSales, Wednesday night at the Anderson Center.
Erik Kerns added 10 points for the Cougars who won their third straight to improve to 8-7 overall and 3-2 in the Freedom Conference.
After trailing throughout most of the second half,
Griffin Sponaugle drained a three-pointer from the right wing to give the Cougars a 55-54 lead with 2:29 to play.
DeSales regained the lead, 56-55, with 1:01 to go and Ware's runner with 31 seconds remaining proved to be the winning margin.
The Bulldogs had a chance to take the lead, but
Andrew Moran corralled a defensive rebound with 14 seconds left.
MU missed a free throw to give the Bulldogs a final chance, but Ware's blocked shot secured the win for MU.
Up 29-28 at halftime, Ware's layup to open the second half gave the Cougars a 31-28 lead.
DeSales answered with a three-pointer to ignite an 11-0 run and take a 39-31 lead that they maintained until the closing minutes.
Greene broke the spurt with a three-pointer off a screen to get MU within 39-34 with 15:28 to play.
Anthony Sergio drained a three-pointer from in front of his own bench to cut it to 43-39 and Pat Widdoss made a jumper in the lane to cut it to 43-41 with 12:01 to go.
DeSales went back up by six, 49-43, but MU responded with two free throws from Greene and a foul line jumper from Widdoss to make it 49-47 with 5:54 to play.
After a DeSales bucket,
Cael Evans' layup on a nice feed from Greene got MU back within two, 51-49.
Greene answered a DeSales' three-pointer with a trey of his own from the left wing to keep MU close, 54-52, and Sponaugle put the Cougars in front.
The teams traded baskets throughout the first half with neither squad leading by more than five points in the opening 20 minutes.
The Bulldogs made four three-pointers to take 14-9 lead before Sponaugle drilled a three from the left wing to cut the margin to 14-12 with 12:33 to go in the half.
After another DeSales three-pointer, Kerns made back-to-back layups to pull MU within 17-16 midway through the period.
Evans took a long pass from Greene for a layup and Greene buried a deep three-pointer to give MU a 23-19 lead.
DeSales used a 7-0 run to take a 26-23 lead, but Kerns and Widdoss both made two free throws to cut the margin to 28-27, and Greene added two foul shots to give MU a one-point halftime advantage.
Misericordia will host Delaware Valley, Saturday at 3:00.
