Ware Carries Cougars Over King's for Sixth Straight Win

Box Score The Misericordia University men's basketball team extended its winning streak to six games to remain atop the Freedom Conference standings with a 71-66 overtime win at King's, Wednesday.

Steve Ware led the Cougars with a game-high 26 points along with four blocked shots and four steals.

Matt Greene and Joe Busacca added 14 and 11 points, respectively as the Cougars improved to 11-7 overall and 5-2 in league play to keep pace with Delaware Valley while DeSales and FDU-Florham both lost to fall into a three-way tie for second place.

Erik Kerns returned to the line-up and added eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.

King's took a 62-60 with a pair of free throws to open the overtime session, but Ware scored on three straight possessions to give the Cougars a 66-64 lead with under a minute to play.

Busacca grabbed a defensive rebound and made a free throw at the other end for a 67-64 lead with six seconds remaining.

After King's pulled within one with a pair of free throws, Greene answered with two foul shots for 69-66 lead with four seconds to go and Kerns tacked on two more free throws to clinch the victory.

A three-pointer from Greene gave MU a 32-30 halftime lead, but the Monarchs rallied to build a 45-39 lead midway through the second half.

Ware's short jumper and back-to-back treys from Griffin Sponaugle and Greene put MU back in front, 47-45, with 9:13 to go.

Greene nailed another three-pointer from the top of the arc for a 53-49 MU lead at 6:45.

Tied 56-56, Ware beat the shot clock buzzer and converted his second three-point play in a four-minute span to give MU a 59-56 lead with 1:05 remaining.

King's scored a pair of buckets in the final minute while limiting MU to one free throw to force overtime, 60-60.

With King's leading 21-15 midway through the first half, Busacca made a jumper and capped an 8-1 run with a lay up to tie the score, 23-23, with 4:53 left.

King's went ahead 26-23, but Greene hit two three-pointers over the final 2:29 to give MU a one-point halftime advantage.

Misericordia will host FDU-Florham, Saturday at 3:00.
