Box Score The Misericordia University men's basketball team dropped the championship game of the Holiday Inn Classic at Catholic, to Cortland, 69-62, Sunday afternoon in Washington D.C.
Steve Ware was named to All-Tournament team after posting a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds while
Erik Kerns had a team-high 17 points.
Joe Busacca and
Matt Greene added 11 points each.
Misericordia opened the game with an 11-2 run thanks to four points from Kerns and a three-pointer by Greene.
Another three-pointer from Greene and a Busacca layup put MU ahead 22-14 with 8:10 left in the first half, but Cortland responded with 12 straight points to take a 26-22 lead.
Griffin Sponaugle drilled a three-pointer and
Anthony Sergio sank a jumper to put the Cougars back in front, 29-28, but Cortland took a 32-31 halftime lead.
The teams went back-and-forth early in the second half and were tied 43-43 before the Red Dragons used an 11-0 spurt to take a 54-43 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining.
Free throws by Busacca, Greene and Ware helped the Cougars get within 60-54 with 4:31 left.
A three-point play from Kerns cut the deficit to 65-60 with 1:14 to go, but the Cougars never got any closer.
Misericordia, 5-6, will visit Susquehanna, Wednesday.
